Barnes residents unite to mark
International Day Of Peace
In 2001, Peace One Day achieved its primary objective: a United Nations
General Assembly Resolution, put forward by the British and Costa Rican
governments, was adopted unanimously by UN member states formally establishing
an annual day of global ceasefire and non-violence on the UN International
Day of Peace - Peace Day - fixed in the global calendar on 21st September.
Since 2005, residents of Barnes have been coming together to light
a candle for the International Day of Peace around Barnes Pond, bringing
a moment of silence and prayer. This year, we had around thirty people
who united around the pond, from young and old, lighting and placing
their candles. Thanks to Barnes in Common, the article in the previous
edition of the magazine attracted more people from our community.
Each year, we will recognise the Day and we invite you to join us
to make this symbolic gesture on behalf of our community.
Our eventual aim is to create, with permission, a space in the chapel
of the Methodist Church, where people will be able to hang their Prayers
for Peace on the prayer tree and surround the whole pond in light.
In 2008/9, the 21st September will land on a weekend, which hopefully
will enable us to bring more people from our churches together to unite
against war and hatred.
