Rene Rawkins

Rene first attended St Mary's in 1935 and married Len there in 1947. She had three children, sewed all her own clothes and was an excellent needlewoman – using her treadle sewing machine. A homemaker and the pivot of her family, until the end of her life she was included in everything and loved taking part. A real helper, she never said no – you only had to ask and she did it. She was a great rower (which was quite unusual in her time) and her sons took after her in that and she stayed very involved – frequently entertaining members of the rowing club with her excellent food and warm hospitality. She was a great cake-maker, and her gingerbread is especially remembered.

Len died six years ago, just after their only granddaughter was born and they also had two grandsons. Family oriented, Rene cared deeply about people in her quiet way and helped many in whatever way she could. We missed her if she wasn’t in Church. and now that she is with us no more we see that she was outstanding in her selflessness and miss that huge and lovely smile.
