Jean Lawrence1929-2008
Many of us at St Mary's were very sad when Jean Lawrence died on 2 January, after a long spell in hospital, following a severe stroke at Christmas 2006. It was perhaps a relief too that her suffering was over. Jean was a deeply committed wife and mother to three sons. Her husband, John, was in the Air Force and spent a lot of time abroad on active duty. Jean not only took all the moves and periods of separation in her stride but also developed her own career, and in this she was in many ways ahead of her time. Over the years she and John became grandparents to nine grandchildren, who brought them great pleasure. Their marriage lasted for 54 years until John died in December 2006. Many of us remember their warm hospitality and the energy they invested in everything they did. Jean was always good, lively company, interesting, well-travelled and very proud to be a Geordie! They lived in Barnes for thirty years, with Jean a stalwart in the community. She taught at SELTEC and Westminster College, finally becoming Chair of the Catering Teachers Association. At St Mary's Jean was a Churchwarden and member of the P.C.C. and Deanery Synod. She was active at Diocesan level - she served on the Bishop's Council, was Chair of the Southwark Diocesan Welcare Service Trust for five years and as a SPA was a day chaplain at Southwark Cathedral. Latterly she will be remembered for being the founder of the "Golden Girls". We will all miss her greatly. She was genuinely one of those people who were "salt of the earth". |
