Wanted: willing guinea-pigs
by Revs. Jean Boulton-Reynolds, Graham Pulham,
Roger Hutchings
'The offer of Jesus: LIFE IN ALL ITS FULLNESS' is the
title of a brand new initiative for Barnes. It will, we hope, provide
a way of inviting adults in the neighbourhood, whether or not they are
churchgoers, to develop their understanding of, and their views about
the Christian faith. This will be through a course of five sessions,
each lasting about an hour and a half. The group which has been thinking
about this for some time feels that such an initiative needs to be genuinely
open, with an opportunity for everyone taking part to express their
own ideas and opinions without feeling that anyone is going to jump
down their throats! We also need to recognise that Christians are not
all agreed on everything, and that different people speak about their
faith in different ways.
It's hoped that such a short five-week course can be offered
more widely by next autumn, but for now there's going to be a
first 'go' at it beginning on Tuesday 30th April: the details
are in the 'advert' on page 13. Please consider whether
you can be one of the guinea-pigs! We think that on this occasion it's
likely that most people taking part will already be part of one of Barnes'
congregations. However, if there's someone you know whom you might
invite to join you for these five sessions, that would be excellent.
At the end of the course, we will value feedback, so that we can learn
to do it better.
What's on offer at each session is soup, cheese (or ham) and
salad, a cup of tea or coffee, three three-minute presentations, a conversation
(in groups) and, to conclude each session, an experience of Christian
meditation in different styles and traditions. The themes for each session
will be:
Week One My journey
Week Two God's journey entering the world
as a baby called Jesus
Week Three God's journey dying for the world
as a man called Jesus
Week Four God's journey bringing life
for all through Jesus
Week Five Choices for the journey ahead
Please let one of the clergy have your name if you're interested,
or contact us by phone. We hope you'll come, and we need to know
so that we can provide sufficient supper.
