For our prayers

Here once more are some suggestions for our prayers. We can use them in our private devotion, and perhaps in our churches, as part of our commitment to pray for each other, for our community and for the wider concerns which the gospel puts before us.

Week beginning 2 July
At the end of this week all the CTiB churches will in one way or another be involved in the Barnes Fair – an event which brings thousands of people into the heart of our community. Use this as an opportunity to pray for Barnes, and for those who work so hard on this occasion. Pray that the Christian presence in and around the Fair will remind visitors of the gospel and of our witness.

Week beginning 9 July
This Sunday is when many congregations around the country will remember the work of NCH – formerly the National Children’s Home. Pray for those who work in all the charities which take responsibility for children in need, whether Christian or not. If you know anyone personally involved in caring for underprivileged children, pray for them by name.

Week beginning 16 July
We all need times of refreshment and renewal, and for those of us fortunate enough to be able to take a summer holiday, the time is probably approaching! Pray for those who work in the travel and tourist industries, and for anyone you know who’s about to go on holiday. Pray too for those unable to have any holiday because of their personal circumstances.

Week beginning 23 July
Today is the last Sunday of the ministry of the Revd Veronica Faulks at the Methodist Church. Give thanks for the work she has done in this neighbourhood and in the Roehampton ecumenical parish, and for her enthusiastic support of CTiB. Pray for her and her husband, Henry, as they move on into retirement.

Week beginning 30 July
As we continue to fulfil our intention as Christians to work together, we thank God for the friendships which so many now enjoy among the local churches. Pray in particular for the parish of St Michael’s as the congregation start a new phase in their common life with their new buildings. Pray for Fr. Paul Holland in his work.

Week beginning 6 August
Books are an important medium even in these days of electronic communication. Pray for any authors you know, and for the staff of our local libraries in Castlenau and Sheen.

Week beginning 13 August
There are many people who own or work in the businesses in the High Street, White Hart Lane and Castlenau: they’re a vital part of our lives. Pray for those who run our shops, offices, cafes and pubs, remembering especially anyone you know.

Week beginning 20 August
At this time of year, many teenagers are receiving the results of examinations, and then making decisions which may well change the course of their lives. Pray for them in their anxiety and in their joy or sadness. Remember particularly those parents and teenagers in your congregation directly involved.

Week beginning 27 August
Tomorrow is the feast-day of St Augustine of Hippo, one of the greatest Christian scholars of his own (or any) age. Pray today for contemporary Christian scholars, those who teach in theological colleges, seminaries and universities, and for those studying for ministry and priesthood. Pray particularly for anyone you know who is preparing for ordination.
