Modern Art in St Mary’s Barnes

A detail of one of Raimund Schmolze's pieces from Drawing by numbers, ten works for John

The Friends of St Mary’s Barnes have invited Raimund Schmolze to exhibit his most recent series of paintings Drawing by numbers, ten works for John within the walls of St. Mary's. His series is a unique approach to one of the most interesting texts of the New Testament, providing an intensely colourful deconstruction of John’s revelation. The artist has placed his focus on numbers used in the text and on symbols associated with these numbers rather than the literal images used in the revelation. The result is a dazzling, vibrant imagery that invites the observer to pause and carefully study and reveal the biblical context of the paintings.

Raimund Schmolze, a German-born artist, lives and works in London. He has previously exhibited his paintings in Berlin, Hamburg, Michigan and Santiago de Chile. His last series of paintings was 12 interpretations of the Turin shroud, exhibited during Easter 2004 at the Christus Kirche, Berlin. Drawing by numbers was made between December 2003 and April 2005 in a series of intense work sessions in the artist’s small Chiswick flat. All works are 140x120 cm in size, acrylic and gold on canvas.

The show opened on Sunday 19 June with a talk by the artist followed by a reception. The show will close on Friday 22 July. Opening hours during weekdays are 10.30am till 12.30pm, Saturdays, 10.00am till 4.00pm, Sundays, during services.
