FiSH Sundayby Veronica Schroter
FiSH Sunday was celebrated by over 80 people at St. Mary's Church, Barnes on June 5th. The Rev. Ross Collins welcomed us to St. Mary’s on a sunny afternoon for a service which highlighted the theme of the HELP that FiSH gives in our community. Jenny Hughes outlined the services we offer to those in need and volunteers and those who receive help from FiSH spoke of their participation in an organisation that has opened up new aspects to their lives. The choir and musicians added star quality to the service planned by Jenny and Ross. Jean Lawrence spoke movingly on the help her family have needed throughout the different stages of their lives and how we all need to have that help and support at some point. After reading Psalm 121, "I will lift up mine eyes to the hills, whence cometh my help", I reminded the congregation that FiSH sprang from the Churches in the early sixties and that they have supported FiSH ever since. HELP is the cornerstone of FiSH and without those in need of help and those who give help we would not exist. This symbiotic relationship ensures that we contribute to a safer and stronger neighbourhood in Barnes, Mortlake and East Sheen, where our volunteers give unstinting help in many diverse ways. Perry Kitchin and the band led us throughout the service and we all swung along to a good Sixties' reminder as the choir sang Lennon and McCartney's Help. Rachel and Juliet had put the musical content together and this ended with Juliet's lovely rendering of Ave Maria, before we sampled the delicious tea organised by Rachel Okarimia. Thank you Ross for inviting us to St. Mary's for an inspiring FiSH Sunday, and to all the churches in their support of our community. We hope that you will visit the FiSH stall outside the Barnes Green Social Centre on Barnes Fair Day – July 9th. Veronica Schroter is Chair of Barnes Mortlake and East
