BOOK REVIEW

Tokens of Trust: An Introduction to Christian Belief
by Rowan Williams

St Mary's book group have been reading the Archbishop of Canterbury's beautiful new book, Tokens of Trust. It is an Introduction to Christian belief' (Canterbury Press 2007) which explores the essentials of Christian belief as they are found in the Creeds and weighs them up in relation to the challenges of today's untrusting world.

In this highly-original and thought provoking book, Dr Williams suggests as his basic idea that Christian belief is really about knowing who and what to trust. To say 'I believe' is to open oneself to the eternally trustworthy love of God and to begin to grapple with the implications of this belief for one's everyday life. On this foundation, Dr Williams develops a wide-ranging review of the fundamentals of Christian belief in today's world, encapsulating profound truths in language 'shot through with pure poetry'.

While the book group have found this book a challenging and at times difficult read, they all agree that this is a book to treasure that will reveal new depths and dimensions each time it is read. As one member of our group put it, 'this is a book with nuggets of gold'. Highly recommended reading for 2008 and available from Barnes bookshop!
