St Michael and All Angels Community Centre
From January 2007, unforeseen calamities permitting, there will be an exciting new venue in Barnes. St Michael and All Angels Church will be opening the doors to its spacious Community Centre. This project has been pushed, nursed and cajoled along through the last two and a half years by Peter Howe, Father Paul, and the P.C.C. The feeling on entering is that of a warm, spacious living room, flooded with natural light from clever overhead windows and a vast glass wall with doors opening on to what will be a peaceful, sensory garden; this is still at the planning stage but will evolve along with its new occupants and willing volunteer gardeners. Hands up please! Underfloor heating has been installed as well as a sprung floor for added comfort, giving an extra bounce to dancing! If next summer is anything like the summer of 2006 the designers have thoughtfully installed air conditioning. Michelle Hams, who is the co-ordinator of the new centre, is quite right when she says that they have created a truly temperate climate. So many such places are either freezing cold or so hot one has to make an excuse and leave! Everything is in place to make a really homely atmosphere. It will be a pleasure to use the fully equipped kitchens which are able to run to more than the usual cappuccino. For those hiring the room Michelle can supply contacts for local suppliers. A piano and an in-built sound system make the centre an ideal place for musical events. It would be a terrific venue for anything from Christening parties, receptions, to business functions. The ceiling has been acoustically designed to enhance the quality of sound - brilliant for those of us who are hard of hearing. After only a couple of open days this month, the room has already been booked for two children's classes, a Yoga course and wait for it..... Belly Dancing! Handy for the post Christmas bulge. As well as social events, St Michaels and All Angels Community Centre will stand as a place for all to visit and be among and meet new friends. With its marvellous range of high tech amenities the centre will appeal to all ages of our community along with easy access and facilities for the disabled. So there it is, our new Community centre. Resting comfortably alongside the church. A home from home giving everybody the opportunity to share in new experiences and to communicate their thoughts and cares with friends old and new. Thank you everybody for working so hard for us all, especially Pete Howe and Father ‘red-socks' Paul. See you there. To organise a visit to the venue or reserve a date, call the Tel: 020 8876 6682 |
